In my humble opinion, the best choice for protein drinks the first few weeks after WLS are ready to drink’s. Here’s why: The first few weeks when you are home from the hospital you will only be drinking about 1/3 of a cup at a time. The RTD proteins are great, shake ’em up, pour out 1/3 cup, and pop the rest in the fridge for the next “feeding time”.
When you make shakes in the blender, they really don’t keep well. They start to separate, and even shaking them back together again, they are a bit “ick”. Let’s not forget the fact too that you’re gonna be sore, and not feel like hanging out in the kitchen blending together protein drinks.
Don’t forget when looking for any protein drink, RTD’s especially, you need to check three things: Sugar content, protein content, and calories. There are many different brands and flavors of RTD’s so before surgery sample some and see what you like. There’s the thick shake type variety, the clear stuff, the protein shots, and protein gelatin’s.
Whichever you chose, just make sure you’re hitting those 60g-80g of protein a day…your body needs that protein to heal!
