Don’t believe everything that you read

Ever notice whenever you’re going through a life change-having a baby, buying a new house, losing weight-everyone and their brother want to give you advice?  WLS is a big life change, and there are plenty of people offering advice to us.   Here’s my two cents worth of advice:  Use your common sense, and never veer from what a professional tells you!

Having bariatric surgery is a very big life change.  Basically you are having your insides rearranged.  That is a big deal!  But all too often I see people offering really shady advise, like “never eat carbs again”, or “only X brand of vitamins is okay for bariatric people” or one of my favorites “there’s really no need to exercise after having the surgery”.  Personally, I take every piece of advise with a grain of salt.  If advice  feels off to you, don’t take it.  Anyone that tells you you have to use a particular brand of vitamin, or protein, is just trying to sell you something.  Anyone who advises you to cut out a whole food group for weight loss purposes needs to go take a nutrition class.   Anyone who advises you not to exercise needs to be deleted from your contact list (okay, okay, I’m just teasing…no need to be that harsh, just clue them in that exercise is a must for everyone!)

The best way to handle bad advise is to ignore it, or politely say “I am sticking to what my surgeon suggests, thanks”.   Remember, this is your health.  Listen to your gut before believing what you read or hear!
