Okay, everyone knows that WLS won’t change their problems or make them go away. Yeah, we know that in our heads, but in our hearts, sometimes we hope it will.
As overweight people, we tend to blame a lot of our problems on our weight, and think if we could get that under control, maybe everything else will follow suit. But then we lose the weight, and it doesn’t happen.
Our relationship status doesn’t change, we still have money issues, or problems at work. We still get attitudes from our kids, or have spats with family members. Will bariatric surgery change your life? You bet it will! It will help you lose weight, and reduce the likelihood that you will die from a weight related illness. It will help boost self confidence, and help us feel better about our bodies. But it won’t fix all those other issues we all have in our lives.
That is one reason that I strongly recommend taking notice and care of our mental health while on this weight loss journey. Sometimes when the weight is gone, but our other problems remain, it’s a low blow. It feels like a let down. We thought when the weight came off our lives would be one thing, but then they aren’t. Some of our feelings we hid with food and our weight before our WLS, and now those feelings are exposed, and there is no where to hide them anymore.
So think about the things in your life that are really and truly related to your weight, and expect them to change. Everything else will have to be tackled just like it is now, one step at a time.
